Evaluation and care for birthmarks and other patches of pigmented skin.
Nevus of Ota is a bluish-gray patch of pigmentation that typically appears around one eye, affecting the surrounding skin and sometimes the white of the eye itself. It usually develops in infancy or during puberty and, unlike many birthmarks, tends to persist or even darken over time.
Pigment-producing cells become trapped in the deeper layer of skin around the eye during development.
This condition cannot be prevented.
Q-switched or picosecond laser treatment can significantly lighten the affected area over a series of sessions.
Myth: Nevus of Ota is a type of skin cancer. Fact: It is a benign pigment condition, though the affected eye should be monitored by an ophthalmologist for a small increased risk of related eye changes.
