Description

Flat warts are small, smooth, slightly raised growths that often appear in clusters on the face, hands, or shins. They're caused by a different HPV strain than common warts and tend to spread more easily, especially with shaving.

Causes

HPV infection of the skin, often spread and multiplied through shaving, scratching, or minor skin trauma.

Prevention

Avoid shaving directly over a flat wart, and use a clean, sharp razor to limit skin trauma that can spread the virus.

Treatment Options

Topical retinoids, gentle cryotherapy, or in-office chemical peels; treatment is chosen carefully to avoid spreading the virus further.

Myths vs. Facts

Myth: Flat warts are a different condition from other warts. Fact: They're caused by HPV just like other warts, simply a different strain that produces a flatter, smoother growth.
